The copper pipe scrap price you are offered depends less on the pipe itself and more on what is still stuck to it. Fittings, solder, insulation and paint all decide which grade it lands in.
Quick answer: Copper pipe is priced per kilo by grade. Clean pipe with no fittings, solder, paint or insulation gets the top pipe grade. Pipe with brass fittings, soldered joints, foam insulation or burnt sections drops a grade or has weight deducted. The base follows the world copper market, so call or WhatsApp for today's rate.
Where copper pipe scrap comes from
Most of the copper pipe we see in Musaffah comes from two places: air conditioning work and plumbing. Both are copper, but they arrive at the yard in very different condition.
AC and refrigeration pipe
Split units, ducted systems and chillers use soft copper pipe for the refrigerant lines. When a building in Abu Dhabi changes its AC, a lot of this comes out at once. It usually arrives with black foam insulation still on it, tape wrapped around the joints, and flare nuts or brass valves on the ends. Inside the units there is also copper in the coils, but that is a separate grade because the copper is pressed into aluminium fins.
Plumbing pipe
Water lines in older villas and commercial buildings are often hard copper pipe joined with soldered fittings. This pipe is usually bare, but it has many elbows and tees, and each joint carries a ring of solder. Sometimes it is painted to match a wall, or covered in lime scale on the inside.
If you are not sure the pipe is copper at all, do the two basic checks. A magnet should not stick to it. A scrape with a file should show a salmon pink colour under the brown surface. Our guide on copper scrap and its grades has more on telling red metal apart.
Clean pipe vs pipe with fittings: what is the difference?
This is where most of the money is. A yard buys copper to sell it on to a smelter or a refiner, and they pay most for copper that needs no further work. Every piece of other metal or plastic is something that has to be removed later.
| What the pipe looks like | How it is usually graded | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Bare, clean, no fittings, no solder, no paint | Top grade for pipe | Keep it in its own bag or bundle |
| Clean pipe with some oxidation, light tarnish | Usually still top pipe grade | Nothing, tarnish is normal |
| Pipe with soldered joints or brazed ends | Second grade | Cut the joints off and sell them apart |
| Pipe with brass valves, flare nuts or fittings | Second grade or weight deducted | Unscrew or cut the brass off |
| Pipe with foam insulation or tape | Insulation weight deducted, lower grade | Strip the foam and tape |
| Painted, burnt or heavily scaled pipe | Lower grade | Keep it separate so it does not pull down the clean pipe |
The brass you cut off is not wasted. Brass fittings and valves have their own grade, and we explain it in our article on the brass scrap price per kg.
Brazing, solder and insulation: what lowers the grade?
Brazed joints
AC installers join copper pipe by brazing, usually with a copper phosphorus rod or a silver-bearing rod. The joint looks like a smooth bulge where two pipes meet. A short brazed joint does not ruin a pipe, but a bundle with a lot of them is not clean copper anymore. The cleanest approach is to cut a few centimetres either side of each joint with a pipe cutter. The straight lengths go into the top pile, and the joints go into a second pile.
Soldered joints
Plumbing joints are usually soldered with a tin based solder, and in older buildings sometimes a tin lead solder. Solder is a different metal sitting on the copper, and it has to come off at the smelter. Soldered fittings almost always sit in a lower grade than bare pipe. Same answer: cut them off if the quantity makes it worth the time.
Insulation and tape
AC pipe foam is light, but on thin pipe it can be a real share of the weight, and it is bulky. Wet insulation is worse because it carries water. Stripping it takes a sharp knife and some patience. If you cannot strip it, tell us when you send the photos and we will price it as insulated pipe rather than as clean copper.
Other things that drag a load down:
- Steel clamps, hangers and screws still attached to the pipe.
- Oil inside AC pipe, especially near the compressor end.
- Plastic sleeves, cable ties and rubber grommets.
- Copper coated or copper coloured pipe that is actually steel, which a magnet will catch.
- Mixing copper pipe with copper cable, coils or sheet in the same bag.
How is the per kilo rate decided?
We do not print a number on this site, and you should be careful with any website that does. Copper moves every day. The world base price is set on the London Metal Exchange, and every yard in the UAE works down from that base according to grade.
When you send photos of copper pipe, these are the things we look at:
- The grade. Clean pipe, pipe with fittings, insulated pipe, or a mix.
- How much of the weight is not copper. Brass, solder, steel, foam, oil and water.
- The quantity. A few kilos from a single job or a full load from a building strip out.
- The market that day. If copper moved overnight, the rate moves with it.
That is all. There is no hidden formula. Two loads of the same weight can get very different rates because one was sorted and the other was not.
A quick word on AC gas
If the pipe is coming straight off a working system, the refrigerant gas should be recovered by a qualified technician before anyone cuts the lines. Refrigerant handling in Abu Dhabi has its own rules, set by the environment authorities. Ask your AC contractor about it, and do not cut a charged line yourself.
How to sell copper pipe to Scrap Buyer Musaffah
Sort the pipe into clean, with fittings, and insulated. Take a photo of each pile, plus a close shot of a cut end so we can see the colour. Send them on WhatsApp to +971 52 727 0105 with a rough weight in kg. We will give you the rate per kilo for each pile, for that day. You can also write to us through the contact page.
Bring the pipe to our yard in Musaffah M42, near Bin Mansoor Plastic Factory, Abu Dhabi. It goes on the scale in front of you and you read the weight yourself. If you also have copper cable from the same job, see our guide on copper cable scrap and keep it in a separate bag. Call or WhatsApp for today's rate.
Common questions
Is AC copper pipe worth more than plumbing pipe?
Not by itself, the copper is the same. What matters is condition: AC pipe often comes with insulation and brass flare nuts, plumbing pipe with soldered fittings. Whichever one arrives cleaner gets the better grade.
Do I have to strip the insulation off AC pipe?
No, we buy it with the insulation on. The rate is lower because the foam weight is deducted and the copper has to be stripped later. If you have time, stripping it usually earns more per kilo.
Is it worth cutting off the fittings?
On a few kilos it may not be. On a full load from a building it usually is, because the clean lengths move to the top pipe grade and the brass fittings are sold at their own grade.
Can I sell AC coils together with copper pipe?
Bring them, but keep them in a separate pile. Coils have copper tubes pressed into aluminium fins, so they are priced as their own grade and should not be mixed with clean pipe.
Why do different yards quote different rates for copper pipe?
Each yard grades by what it sees and sells on to different buyers. Ask what grade the rate is for, and send clear photos so the rate is based on your actual pipe.
