A metal scrap buyer can only give you a useful number if they know what they are pricing. Having a few answers ready gets you a clearer quote, fewer surprises at the scale, and a quicker sale.
What the buyer will ask
- What is the metal? If you do not know, a photo usually answers it.
- How much is there, roughly? A few kilos, a pickup load or a truck.
- Is it clean, or does it have plastic, rubber, glass, oil or other metals attached?
- Where is it? At ground level, on a roof, inside a building, behind other material?
- Can you bring it in, or does it need collecting?
Photos that help
Take one photo of the whole pile so the size is clear, then a few close-ups: the cut end of a pipe or cable, any labels or plates on motors and machines, and any attachments. Clear photos in daylight save a lot of back and forth.
Safety checks before anything moves
- Gas cylinders and closed tanks have to be empty and open before they travel. Ask first.
- Batteries go upright, not leaking, and apart from other metal.
- Machinery should have its oil, fuel and coolant drained.
- Anything that has held chemicals: tell the buyer what was in it.
If you are selling for a company
Check who in your company approves the sale of scrap, and whether your accounts team needs a receipt or a weighbridge slip. It is easier to sort this out before the truck arrives than after.
A quick way to add value
Separate the metals. Even three piles, with copper and brass in one, aluminium in another and steel in a third, usually pay more than the time they take. How selling works has the full steps.

Common questions
What does a scrap buyer need to give me a quote?
The type of metal, a rough weight, whether it is clean or has attachments, where it is, and whether you can bring it in. Photos help a lot.
Can I sell scrap metal without knowing its grade?
Yes. Send a photo or bring it in and the buyer will grade it. Knowing the grade yourself just helps you judge the quote.
Can I sell an old gas cylinder as scrap?
Ask before you bring one. A sealed or part full cylinder is dangerous to handle and transport, and many yards will not take one unless it has been emptied and opened.
