Car Battery Scrap Price in the UAE: What an Old Battery Is Worth

What sets the car battery scrap price in the UAE, why a dead battery is worth as much as a weak one, and how to store and sell old batteries safely.

The car battery scrap price comes down to one thing: the lead inside. Lead is bought by weight, so a dead battery is worth the same as one that still starts a car, and a heavy truck battery is worth more than a small hatchback one.

Quick answer: An old car battery is bought by weight for the lead inside it, so a dead battery is worth the same as a weak one. The rate follows the world lead market and changes daily. Keep batteries upright, closed and with the acid inside, store them in shade, and send a photo with a rough count on WhatsApp to get today's rate.

What decides the car battery scrap price?

Three things, roughly in this order: weight, the lead market, and the type and condition of the battery. Whether it still holds a charge does not come into it.

Weight

Most of a lead acid battery's weight is lead plates and lead paste. The rest is acid and the plastic case. A buyer pays for the whole battery by the kilo, at a rate that already allows for the acid and the case. So the heavier it is, the more it is worth. One big truck or generator battery can outweigh several small car batteries, and a pallet of UPS batteries adds up faster than people think.

The lead market

Lead is traded internationally, and the London Metal Exchange sets the world reference price. Scrap battery rates follow it, so they move with the market, sometimes from one week to the next. That is why we do not print a battery price on the website, and why a rate you were quoted last month may not hold today.

Type and condition

Ordinary car and truck batteries, UPS batteries and sealed AGM or gel batteries are all lead acid, and they are bought the same way. Lithium batteries are a different material and are not priced like lead. Cracked or leaking batteries are still bought, but they have to be kept apart from the rest.

Lead acid or lithium: which one do you have?

Almost every petrol and diesel car on the road in the UAE uses a lead acid starter battery. Hybrids and electric cars also carry a large lithium pack, and phones, laptops and power tools use small lithium cells. The two are handled differently, so it is worth knowing which one you have before you call.

Reading the label

Lead acid batteries usually say "lead acid", "Pb", "AGM" or "gel" on the case, often next to the crossed-out bin symbol with Pb under it. Lithium packs say "Li-ion" or "LiFePO4". A lead acid battery is also much heavier than it looks for its size. If the label has worn off, a clear photo of the battery and its terminals is enough for us to tell you what it is.

Hybrid and electric car packs

Do not try to take a hybrid or EV pack out of a car yourself. These packs run at high voltage and need trained hands. If the battery is still in a vehicle you want to get rid of, see our vehicle scrap page and send photos before anyone touches it.

How should you store and move old batteries?

Most battery accidents happen in the weeks between taking a battery out and selling it. A few habits keep everyone safe:

  • Keep them upright so the acid stays inside.
  • Do not drain the acid or open the case. Draining it is dangerous and does not raise the price.
  • Tape or cap the terminals so they cannot short against metal or against each other.
  • Store them indoors or in shade, on a pallet or a plastic tray, away from drains.
  • Stand them in rows, not stacked on top of each other.
  • Carry them in a crate or strapped to a pallet, never loose in a car boot.
  • Wear gloves. Acid burns skin and clothes even when the outside of the battery looks dry.

Abu Dhabi summers are hard on old batteries. A cracked case leaks faster in the heat, so do not leave a pile outside for months. Old batteries also never belong in general waste. Lead and battery acid are hazardous, and in Abu Dhabi the rules for hazardous waste are set by the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi and Tadweer. If your workshop or site produces old batteries regularly, ask them what applies to you.

Does a dead or cracked battery still sell?

Yes. A dead battery and a weak one are worth the same, because the lead has not gone anywhere. A battery that will not hold a charge for a day is still full of lead plates.

A cracked battery that has lost some acid may weigh a little less and needs separate handling, but it is still bought. Tell us about it when you call, so it travels apart from the sound ones and its acid cannot reach the floor of your vehicle or the rest of the load. Do not try to weld or tape the case shut. Standing it upright in a plastic box is enough.

For a single battery, the garage fitting your new one will often take the old one. Workshops, fleet operators, UPS rooms and telecom sites that collect batteries in quantity usually do better selling them by weight to a scrap yard. Keep a rough count as they come in, so you know how many you have when you call. Garages, tyre shops, bus and truck workshops, buildings with standby power, and data rooms that replace batteries on a schedule are where the stacks build up. Boats, forklifts and generators use lead acid batteries too. Read more about the used batteries we buy, and about how metal recycling works once the lead leaves the yard.

Selling car batteries to Scrap Buyer Musaffah

Our yard is in Musaffah M42, near Bin Mansoor Plastic Factory, Abu Dhabi. This is how a battery sale works with us:

  1. Send a photo on WhatsApp with a rough count and the type: car, truck, UPS or other.
  2. We give you the rate before you load, based on type, condition and the day's lead market.
  3. Batteries are weighed separately from all other scrap, in front of you, and you read the scale yourself.
  4. Cracked or leaking batteries are set apart before weighing, so the count is clear for both sides.

Lead prices change daily, so we do not publish battery prices on the website. Call or WhatsApp +971 52 727 0105 for today's rate, or send the details through our contact page. If you are in Musaffah or nearby, you can also bring them straight to the yard.

Common questions

Is a dead car battery worth anything as scrap?

Yes. Batteries are bought by weight for the lead inside, so a dead battery is worth the same as one that still works. Only the weight and the day's lead market change the rate.

Should I drain the acid before selling a battery?

No. Keep the battery closed and upright. Draining the acid is dangerous, and the rate already allows for the acid, so it does not raise the price.

Do you buy lithium or EV batteries?

Lithium batteries need different handling from lead acid ones and are not priced like lead. Send a photo first and ask before you bring them.

Do you buy cracked or leaking batteries?

Yes, but tell us before you bring them. They are carried and weighed apart from the sound batteries, so stand them upright in a plastic box for the trip.

Why does the battery scrap rate change from week to week?

Battery scrap follows the world lead price, which moves with the market. That is why we give the rate on the day you call or message, not on the website.
